Message: Hello Steve Connor! I was at Battersea from 1957 to 1964, so we missed each other by a good four years! However, I thought you might like to know that there is a bulletin board for Old Battersegans - given above as my 'homepage address' - where there are plenty of correspondents who remember Battersea's Foley years. (I am of course strictly from the Chadwick years, but my younger brother was around during your time.) Why not click on the above address and join the Yahoo! Group batt_sal? The same goes for any other Battersea boy.

Message: John-Hello! Thanks for taking this query on board. Yes: I do know about the Blaisdon Recollections CD compiled by Terry O'Neill and this was sent to me. It's exceptionally evocative and illustrated with many photographs taken over 75 years. My take on Blaisdon recalls not only Salesian School life & its influences but also takes in aspects of Blaisdon village life. I was more fortunate than most old boys in that after completing school from 1952-1955 I worked on Stud Farm - chief pigman - from 1955-1961. I moved from there to Belgium to work in a TB Sanatorium in the Ardennes close to the German border. All the best while awaiting developments.

Message: Dear Tony Brady, It is good to hear from you and learn of your wishes to promote the excellent work of the Salesians who did so much for young boys at Blaisdon. I look forward to your completion of your Book 2. I will seek out answers to your queries and let you know what there is that might be helpful to you. Do you have the Recollections of Blaisdon Hall CD that was available at the 70th Reunion last August? You need to have Microsft Publisher to be able to open and read/print it. With best wishes, John

Message: Dear Readers, A great tribute to a Battersea Salesian Past Pupil. In the Queen's Birthday Honours List, issued yesterday, it can be seen that Battersea Past Pupil, Augustine O'Donnell, has been awarded the honour of Knight Commander of the Bath (KCB). 'Gus' O'Donnell is currently Permanent Secretary, HM Treasury, working with Gordon Brown, the Chancellor of the Exchequer. Formerly he worked as press secretary to Nigel Lawson and John Major. There is a profile, and a photograph of him on the web site of the University of Warwick, http://www2.warwick.ac.uk/about/warwickmagazine05/odonnell/ We are fortunate to have him as a Governor of our Salesian College in Battersea, London. The Order of the Bath is an Order of Chivalry which was established in the late middle ages. There is a history of the Order on http://www.royal.gov.uk/output/Page495.asp We offer him our warmest congratulations! -- Fr Patrick Sherlock SDB (GBR Provincial Secretary) ____________________________________________________________

Message: Dear Readers, Excellent results speak for themselves. Success of Salesian Tsunami Appeal Dear Friends The Salesian Tsunami Appeal has produced over £1.5M of support for the victims. The message below appears on the web site of the Salesian Generalate in Rome: http://www.sdb.org/ ANS Rome: 27 January 2005) - As the figures rise, so far 2,500,000 euro have been sent to those affected by the tsunami. The Salesian Family was among the first to be mobilised to send help to Sri Lanka, to southern India, to Thailand and Indonesia, areas where the Salesian Congregation of Don Bosco have 92 works. Funds have been collected from all kinds of Salesian centres: oratories, youth centres, parishes, vocational training centres, schools, Mission Offices and also through the Don Bosco Network. Work groups with volunteers from Italy and Belgium are already coordinating 50 reconstruction projects with local partners. In the meeting of Don Bosco Network (the network of Mission Offices and Salesian NGO) held last week, the Councillor for the Missions, Fr Francis Alencherry, arranged for an increase in the number of medium and long term projects at a cost of 10,000,000 euro. The amount sent from our province, through Provincial House, now amounts to £25,311.60p, including gift aid. Keep visiting the Generalate web site for the latest updates. >> Fr Patrick Sherlock SDB (GBR Provincial Secretary)

Message: Dear Readers, Info about the Salesian work and gratitude for your help, after the tragic tsunami Below: DBN: close on a million dollars distributed in aid BONN: 12th January 2005 -- In a press release issued today from Bonn, the Don Bosco Network announced that it has distributed Euro 737,000, close on a million US dollars worth of aid to areas affected by the Asian Tsunami. These funds have been distributed to assist the local response by the 93 Salesian communities in those areas. The response of Salesians who are managing the relief at the local level has clearly been one of gratitude. "It is heartening to see how many people, from all corners of the world, provide their voluntary help in this tragic circumstance", underlined Fr James Theophilus, SDB Provincial of Tiruchy which covers the badly affected areas of Tamil Nadu. There are 12 Salesian communities our of 23 in the Province sheltering, between them some 10,000 survivors. "We must start a process of economic and social rehabilitation to give a meaning to the future of these people, and we must therefore set up a process of rehabilitation to daily life." Similar thoughts come from Thailand. "The re-opening of schools has been a means of getting back to normality", says Fr John Lissandrin, Provincial Secretary of the Thai Salesian Province, "However many students need to be psychologically supported in order to face the new reality of their country and family". The situation has differed in Indonesia, where the control of the Government over affected areas is stronger, and where access is by invitation only. The Salesians actually do not have communities in the affected areas. But they have been receiving aid and distributing it through the Episcopal Conference and to Caritas which has access via the dioceses to the disaster area. The first two of DBN's stated aims for aid distribution are now largely fulfilled, namely the provision of immediate sustenance and shelter. The project now looks to the remaining three aims, reconstruction, tools and work needs, long-term support for children. _____________________

Message: A merry Christmas to all those ex Shriglesians who helped in any way to make our 75th Anniversary celebrations such a memorable event. We are so thankful to those who met several times to organize the weekend, those who offered publications to mark the event, those who so kindly sponsored the event. In particular we thank the 183 people who turned up and enjoyed the atmosphere created whenever Shriglesians get together. Numerous people helped in many ways during the weekend such as Brother Donald MacDonald bringing the Shrigley vestments worn by the 26 priests who celebrated the Mass in our old Chapel, John Burke bringing the lectern from Savio House. Keith Dransfield who gave all his time to producing a DVD taking five hours of video and making sure that we have the nearest thing to recreating the unique atmosphere which even out did that we have during our yearly August Reunions at Savio House. Other people, too numerous to mention gave of their time and energy to make it the succes that it certainly was from Fr Dan Lyons, one of the first to attend to Sean Gillespie, one of the last to attend. Please don't forget that the current circular is now on our website at www.salesians.org.uk/shrigley

Message: I have recollections from conversations with my late father that he attended a Saleasian college either in Gloucester or Cheltenham in about1940's - 1950's. His name was Edward Francis O'Sullivan. He would have probably had a Liverpool accent in those days even at school. Any information would be most appreciated as I know little about my father and it would help me enormously with my family tree. Many thanks. John.

Message: Hello To All I would like to say hello to all the students and to say just hang in there. My training in the Salesians Old Boys school has served me well all through the years. I completed my studies in 1925 and I just celebrated my 96th birthday with family and chuch family. I have to say it's been a long time since graduation but if anyone remembers back to that time frame I'd be happy to hear from you or anyone else. A. Hugh Cook

Message: Dear John Ward Thank you for your early reply to my message. I wonder if you could put me in touch with anyone who has photographs of Blaisdon Hall, or any books on the Hall. It is getting harder by the year to convince my grandchildren of my hard life at the hall.Going down to the farm, or playing football on one of their three pitches, then I would go back and decorate the ceilings in the house, still someone had to do it. Best wishes R.P.

Message: Hi. To any Cowley pupils 1957 - 1962. I am trying to trace Anthony Parker who was in my form throughout those years. Tony came from Leicester and suffered from Polio as a youngster, so any old pupils in that era would recall him well. He was a border at the school. We were great buddies in our school years but, sadly I lost touch alsmost as soon as we left. If anyone has any ideas of how I can contact him, please let me know on my e-mail address. All the best to all Cowley old boys. I regret that business usually prevents me froma ttending the annual reunion, I have managed it just once, but I hope to get away some year soon. Ray Howard.

Message: I attended Salesian College Chertsey from 1965-1968. My younger brother Scott and I were the only "Yanks" at the school. I remember old friends like Sean McNally, Paul Butler, Paul Markey, Jan Kudrewicz, Colin Mant, and Robert Grant. Robert, remember when we got John Lennon's autograph? Teachers like Mr. Cleworth (now the Headmaster),Brother John (who ran the tuckshop), and Mr. Lowe ("Gibbon"), who can forget him? I'd love to hear from anybody who attended during those years. Thanks for this site.

Can anyone tell me what has happened to Cowley, and are there any old boys out there who might remember me ( my nickname was Terry ). Message: Is there anybody out there who has any recollections of my late father Douglas Arthur KIRKBY (1911-1987) who attended Salesian College Battersea some time (I guess) in the early twenties. I am particularly anxious to identify precisely when he attended the college - he moved on to a seminary in Boulogne but didn't get as far as the priesthood - and would be particularly interested to see any class photographs that he might appear in. It's a long shot, I know, but here's hoping. Chris Groves-Kirkby

Message: Delighted and amused at the football chant: 'One Johnny Bosco, there's only one Johnny Bosco...." and congratulations to the Old Salesians on their achievement. Watch TV this coming weekend for coverage of Everton v. Middlesborough. In order to have a drink with impunity (and with 40,000 plus Evertonians), I shall take the Soccerbus to Goodison. Listen out for the above refrain and maybe also: "And it's Johnny Bosco, Johnny Bosco SDB, he's the greatest saint the Church has ever seen!"

Message: The (Battersea) Old Salesians 1st XI won the AFA Surrey Senior Cup Final on Saturday 20th March beating Kew Association 2-1 at the magnificent Bank of England ground at Roehampton, SW London. How did they win? Well the last words in the player 'huddle' before the game were "St John Bosco - pray for us" [ and some of these players were not exactly regular churchgoers!]. And the captain, Michael Ayres, was wearing a very special number on his shirt - "31", in honour of Don Bosco's Feastday. How could they lose?!!! And a new song was heard from the players in the bar long into the night "There's only one Johnny Bosco, There's only one Johnny Bosco".

Message: I was very happy to discover this "guestbook" reading the messages from former Blaisdon pupils literally brought tears to my eyes. I attended Blaisdon from 53-54 and my surname at the time was Meissl. I have lived in the United States for over thirty years and reside in Los Angeles California. I support the Salesians here in the US. My relatively short time at Blaisdon was the ONLY bright and happy time of my childhood. The kindness and caring shown me at Blaisdon has acted as a beacon of light to me throughout my life. There aren't words to express my gratitude. I'm not sure whether anyone would remember me. But I would be happy to hear from anyone. I'm planning a trip to the UK sometime this year. A blessing to you all. Peter

Message: I would like to say how much i enjoyed attending the old boys reunion at Blaisdon this year. This was my first reunion. many memories were revisited some humourous some sad but taken all round well worth the visit. Wonderfull to meet so many jolly people who came upt he hard way and so many of them seem to have done well in life. I hope to return another year for another visit and to see perhaps more old faces from my time at the Hall. What a lovley village Blaisdon is and it has not changed a bit since I left there in 1948. It is a long way for us to travel from new Zealand but it was well worth the expense and the time. My best wishes to all thsoe chaps I had time to chat with and the many who were not there some due i guess to attrition. Prof Dr Alastair Bourne.

Message: Dear Readers, Some more information on the work of the Salesians of Don Bosco in Liberia. Can you help? John Ward, Vice President, Salesian Past Pupils Federation (GB) The following appeared on the www.ekklesia.co.uk website: Flood of former child soldiers expected - 30/9/03 CAFOD partner Don Bosco Homes in Liberia is preparing to receive thousands of former child soldiers as demobilisation starts on 1 October. While small numbers of child soldiers have been drifting into the night shelters run by Don Bosco Homes since the beginning of the ceasefire in mid August, most are still with their militia units. With the start of the demobilisation process, staff at Don Bosco Homes are preparing for a sudden influx of these deeply traumatised children. The United Nations estimates there are up to 15,000 child soldiers who have been fighting Liberia's bloody civil war. In all three militias - government and the two rebel forces of LURD (Liberians United for Reconciliation and Democracy and MODEL (Movement for Democracy in Liberia) - children can make up around 70 per cent of fighters. Staff at the shelters are expecting several thousands of children to arrive seeking help. Every child who arrives will be given the chance of a new life, swapping guns for schoolbooks. Don Bosco Homes is the only organisation in Liberia currently working with former child soldiers. "Many of the child soldiers who have come to our shelters arrived with bullet wounds, most are in poor health and arrived virtually naked. Some are addicted to the drugs forced upon them at the frontline to give them false courage. All are traumatised by what they have seen and done during their time at the frontline," said Kofi Ireland, one of the supervisors at Don Bosco Homes. Children such as nine year old James Saah who fought with the government militia before managing to escape. During his time at the frontline he received a bullet wound in his leg and was forced to execute two men at point blank range. Now he will start a three month rehabilitation programme that will aim to reunite him with his family and put him back into school to work towards his dream of becoming a car mechanic. To help support Don Bosco Homes, CAFOD has brought in a team from Sierra Leone. The four members of staff from Caritas Makeni are highly experienced in this rehabilitation work as they have successfully reunited thousands of former child soldiers with their families and communities following the end of the Sierra Leone civil war. This Friday (3rd October), CAFOD is asking its supporters to take part in the annual Harvest Fast Day fundraising event. This year the event is focussing on the theme of rebuilding lives and restoring hope. Message: Dear Readers, Sadly it seems that as one step forward is hegotiated in Liberis, it is quckly followed by many steps back, as you will see from the latest out of Liberia by our Slesians. Dear Friends Sister Barbara Brillant has sent the following update: September 6, 2003 Greetings to all of you out there! Just an update of the situation. As you know we are in the news again because fighting has continued in some areas in the North East in Nimba and Bong Counties. The fighting is real but mostly it is the militia on looting sprees. They come into a town and tell everyone to leave because the other side is coming and then they loot. Those who stay around get killed. The amount of rape and sexual violence even to the young boys is beyond comprehension. At times I get up in the morning wondering how does the average person continue this way in such a mess. The Catholic mission is getting itself back on its feet in the Archdiocese of Monrovia slowly. For Gbarnga Diocese it is still very much in a conflict area and we do have radio contact with the priest in Yekepa who is fine and says that Sanniquellie too is fine. We shall try and visit our house in Gbarnga when things permit it. For the Diocese of Cape Palmas it seems that two priest have returned from Ivory Coast to Liberia and stay for short stays overnight in the Charity sisters house as the Bishops house is occupied by the so called liberators! We are three in community here. Evelina, Maria Barbara and myself. Thava has gone home for her visit and Florence has been transferred back to Hong Kong province. We shall miss her in community and she is almost impossible to replace as Psychiatric Nurse Instructor here in Liberia. As usual I continue to go to the co-ordinating meetings at the UNDP office here. I have greeted the famous General Klein. But we work more with the head of Humanitarian mission here which is Ross Mountain, a fine man to work with. But I truly have my questions and concerns about the UN system, the amount of $ that goes into assessing everything to death and I wonder what it is going to do for the country in the end. Already rent has tripled. If you wanted to rent a warehouse before the war it was about 10,000 a year now they start at 25,000. Apartments have gone off the chart. And for programs it seems that in post war or in the crisis the only ones that can apply for the aid and big money etc. are the BIG INGOs and they come in here on a whirlwind not finding out even what language we speak or who was doing something before. I just wonder!!! And still after three weeks of pleading for Buchanan for food to the displaced their numbering 31,000 of which our catholic mission has 7,000 have not seen any food. At best we have carried high protein biscuits to the children. I have been to Buchanan which is in MODEL area three times and we are going back again next week to try and bring more biscuits. The ECOMIL soldiers were to be deployed there, but now with the crisis in Totota and Salala in Bong County the plans are changed. The Catholic Mission is doing marvellous in Buchanan and we continue to pray for their safety as the news coming from there today is that cholera has now broken out with 83 cases last week with four deaths and with the amount of displaced with little or no sanitation or safe drinking water it is another disaster. Once again we all thank you for your prayers and support and I shall try my best to keep as many of you up to date as possible. Our Love and prayers, Barbara, FMM

Message: Dear Readers, Some, by Liberia standards, better news. John Ward, Vice President, Salesian Pat Pupils Federation (GB) Dear Friends Sr Barbara Brillant has sent the following update: ------------------------------------------- 24 August 2003 Hello to everyone, I know you are all waiting for me to send news but we have been so desperately busy trying these past weeks to get some help into Buchanan. The Monrovia area has settled quite a lot although ECOMIL is only deployed in LURD territory and in Sinkor which is the other side of town. In central Monrovia no peacekeepers yet but most of the soldiers have gone out of the area. At night it remains tense and a lot of shooting mostly to loot. Many stores are starting to open and when the bridge was opened by ECOMIL the food just started pouring into town and rice has gone from 120 Liberian Dollars a cup gradually down to 15 per cup. (1 US Dollar = 70 Liberian Dollars.) Most are taking stock of what was looted and what needs now to be done. The peacekeepers are only trickling in and no one expected big things to happen until October 14 when the UN comes. Speaking of the UN it has taken hold of attempting to organize things as far as humanitarian aid goes but I am not so sure yet if that is a positive thing. Although I go to all the meetings including Shelter, Food, protection and now I have been invited to the security one at night. I can imagine the infrastructure bottom line budget is astronomical. Mind you I keep on saying to myself that if they gave us one percent of what they are using on salaries I could feed the country... But I guess it would not be as easy as that. For Buchanan it is still very, very tense and NO food has gone there yet. We have made three assessment trips with a little difficulty but nothing real serious. The MODEL armed group on the ground is not really professional, many child soldiers, but they welcomed us and said we could distribute any help to the people. We estimate 30,000 displaced in churches, schools and 7,000 are on our campus, St. Peter Claver. The Consolata sisters and the Capuchin fathers are there and doing marvellous. We did manage to take medical supplies down on all trips so that is OK for now. The big change on the campus now is that people are allowed to leave and walk around freely. I want to believe that the opening up of the campus was due to all the publicity given to the situation. The press have been a very big help through all of this. But at night all come back to the church compound for safety. It is the only compound that is walled and has some kind of security. Now my task is to motivate, shame, push or beg whatever it takes to convince UN, CRS and WFP to allow food to go down to Buchanan. We shall not have complete security until October and ECOMIL does not have enough troops to deploy into other areas. So pray that we can do that early next week. For those who know Liberia, the other area up to Bomi and Cape Mount is opened and daily trips are going up. Gbarnga still has fighting so that will be a longer time. And the peace treaty is signed but someone needs to tell the small soldiers on the ground that it is over. For us at Mother Patern College (Don Bosco Polytechnic) we are starting next Wednesday to complete the Senior nursing students and Laboratory students clinical experience. No date has been set to open schools as there has been enormous damage to many institutions. Maria Barbara is in Ghana for meetings, so Evie and I are here. We still have 200 displaced from the leprosy colony here at STC but Fr. Gary Jenkins SMA has arrived and he will be taking care of them and will move back out to Bomi as soon as possible. In West Point we are down from 9,000 to 7,000 displaced and working to get more food support for them. We lost 268 people in West Point mostly from rockets that landed. And so you have at least a quick update. And let me share a little humour with this all. Our first trip down to Buchanan was in a Red Cross (ICRC) convoy and they agreed to take one Catholic Mission car, so I went with the ambulance with a driver Maria Barbara and one Italian man from INTERSOS who gave us tarpaulins and BP5 protein biscuits. ICRC gave us one truck. So we were two ICRC cars, one truck and our ambulance. We managed to go past all the government check points and reached what they call "no man's land" between forces and were driving a little slower kind of expecting something to happen. We came over a hill and into a barrage of shooting. The convoy stopped in the middle of the road not moving which seemed like an eternity and was probably 30 seconds. And we saw ICRC all putting on helmets and flack jackets with lead protected vest. In our mission car, we all looked at one another and just began to laugh. We had for ourselves, the roof of the car the sky and God! We had no helmets and vest of course and I said don't worry we will be the last to get shot, they never hit what they are aiming for. Actually the shooting was among themselves and not at us, so we continued with no more incidents... BUT on the other two trips we managed to get our helmets and bulletproof vest from MERLIN and never needed them!!! That is how things go... Again those of you praying don't stop now.... those who have been in contact with me about containers, the most needed item remains food and clothing... I think the UN has enough of the shelter material for now... medicines, if being sent, need to be the correct ones for our situation. Now that we have our generator up and running and pumping water again too I can be in contact more. God Bless you all and we continue to pray for lasting peace. Love, Barbara ------------------------------------------- Fr Patrick Sherlock SDB (Provincial Secretary) _______________________________________________________________ 266 Wellington Road North, STOCKPORT SK4 2QR Tel (0161) 4316633 Visit our Province Web Site www.salesians.org.uk

Message: I am not a past pupil but my father attended Salesian College at Battersea in 1920s/30s. I am unsure of the dates but he was born in 1916 (and died in 1990). My son has recently started work in London and will be living in Battersea. This prompted me to look up his grandfather's old school and I was delighted to find this website. I know my father would have wished everyone involved with the Salesians the very best and I take this opportunity to do so on his behalf.

Message: Dear Readers, I pass on more details of how our tiny Salesian Community in Liberia is determined to stay and help, even under the terrible and frightening situation they have to face. This makes our little effort to help with provision of money for a water tamk at the Salesian Polytechnic lokk quite puny. All we can do, is what we must do, to ease their dreadful burden. John Ward, Vice President, Salesian Past Pupils Federation (GB) Dear Friends, Sister Barbara Brillant FMM has sent the following email, which gives an up-to-the-minute account of the situation in Monrovia: ---------------------------------- Today is Friday (25th July) and it is the first time I am able to send any of you a message to first thank God that we are alive and tell you that my e-mail for now will be... (please ask Fr Joe Brown if you need this address). Please send it to others for me as I do not have all the email addresses I need. They are on the computer back in the school. What I am experiencing now, after going through every war in Liberia, is the worse disaster of all. The people are suffering and the world stands by... The indiscriminate shelling of populated areas is a crime against humanity - no questions about that. It all started on Saturday last week and the rockets were landing all around us. We are three sisters in St Teresa's Convent and four priests and 125 displaced from a leprosy colony and they have become our protectors, literally. On Monday after 40 rockets landing in and around us, one landing in our cemetery, we thought 'Well, that is the worse of it'. No way! The night was terrible. From 11pm to 5am we had three different armed groups over the wall and we were scared!!! The four priests and the displaced, along with our security who have stayed with us, formed groups and forced the soldiers back out. In the end we had to call the Government for help. We stayed quiet inside the convent the whole time as three expatriate women are not the best to find at night. Well, in the morning we had a look at what had happened and they had made off with all the motorcycles and food we had stored. Everyone agreed that it was better we go to the Catholic Hospital for now, so we arranged a convoy with all our cars and drove through all the fighting to the Catholic Hospital. We are now sleeping here at the Catholic hospital which is about 2 miles from our convent and we go back to the compound in the day. It is hard for any of us to express our frustration. We want to do more but at this moment we are a presence and try to say help will come. Help must come before all are lost. We know so well that many have been praying for us and we rely on all your prayers. I shall try and send mail each day now and hope you can get a message out to our families that we are safe. Love to all. Barbara. ---------------------------------- Fr Joe Brown has just been speaking to the Head of the EU in Monrovia, David Parker. He said that the latest news is that there will be a stabilizing force from the African AECAWA (1,000 troops) on Tuesday of next week. Let us pray that peace comes soon!

Message: Dear Readers, especially Salesian Past Pupils, I invite you to consider our most recent project, which our National President has prepared, as is set out below. For those who might not be able to be in touch with their Local Association, I trust that this gives you the opportunity to help us in this new venture. Many thanks for your consideration and hopefully your help. Best wishes, John Ward, Vice President, Salesian Past Pupils' Federation (GB) Salesian Past Pupils of Great Britain National Mission Appeal 2003 Dear Salesian, We in Britain take clean water for granted. Without clean water thousands of Salesian students in Liberia are at risk from harmful bacteria and disease. You could help these young Salesians to have clean fresh water every day. The project is to build a water system and storage tank to collect rainwater in the Don Bosco Polytechnic in Monrovia, the capital of war torn Liberia. This is the first National Past Pupil Mission project – where all eight of the Great Britain Province schools are combining in an appeal to their members to help the Salesian Mission. We have all benefited from our Salesian education. This is our chance to give something back. We are committed to finding £4000 in 2003. If you could give £10, £20, or more, we should be able to transform the lives and health prospects of many thousands of Salesian students for years to come. Cheques should be made payable to “ P.P. SMILE 2003” [ for – “ Past Pupil Salesian Mission in Liberia Expense 2003”], and sent to: - Richard Blake National Treasurer Salesian Past Pupils Federation Glade House 40 Winkfield Road Windsor, Berks. England SL4 4AF Yours sincerely Patrick Morrissey : National President

Message: I was at Thornleigh from 1955 to 1960 (Alpha 1 to Alpha 5) and then to the RAF for 7 years flying fighters. Thence running my own businesses in the Preston area from 1971 to 1996 thence to Japan where I have my own English School. I have met only one one old boy out here who, to my surprise, was American and, as he was much lower in the school than I, I did not know him. Unfortunately it was some time ago and I have lost his name. Sorry! I would be delighted to hear from any who remember me. Perhaps I should open a "branch" here for Asia! Message: Hello any Chertsey Salesians 1961-65 out there? I arrived from Westminster Cathedral Choir School around 1961,went 'day boy'around 1963 and left 1965. I was football mad, grew my hair long, a bit of a rebel. As a day boy I lived in Kingston and caught the train from Surbiton every day. I don't have one school photo!! Names I remember are Fr Curran, Fr Kelleher, Michael Hogan, Shaun Plunkett, Andrew Mckinley. I remember the head boy when I first arrived as a boarder was Dante Leccercorvi who's parents owned a cafe in Lillie Rd Fulham? I realy need to touch base with someone from my era as I have loads of memories but need a nudge to put names to faces. Anyone out there?

Message: I just discovered this site and was fascinated by it. I am Shrigley old Boy - 1962-1966. The only name I recognized in all of the emails was Sean Simpson ( still a great tenor, Sean ?) I go back to Shrigley each time I come to the UK and stay a night or two and while what has been done to the church is unnerving (to say the least) it is great to take a trip down memory lane and my wife and children enjoy being there also. ( I remember many world milestones during my time at Shrigley and, very vividly, what we were doing and how we reacted at the time : the death of JFK, Winston Churchill, the Cuban missile crisis and so on.) I would be interested in hearing from anyone and in any reunions, etc. Regards, Gerry Carty

Message: This is to confirm that the Service for Kevin Cummins will take place at Pantasath Church near Holywell North Wales on Tuesday 14th January at 1pm with internment after the service in the Family Grave. Refreshments will be available after the internment. Mike O'Brien has wrote this great poem in memory of Kevin. Goodbye Kevin Goodbye You lived a life that was rich Giving more than you ever received And your voice among us is missed More than we might have believed. Goodbye Kevin Goodbye The stories you told, the places you went You would share with us Old Boys, Giving hours of time and think it well spent Which we remember as always a joy. Goodbye Kevin Goodbye So Goodbye Kevin Goodbye Your voice may be quiet but your spirit survives And the Lads from Blaisdon will always recall A sensitive soul who kept principles alive You gave it your best and were an example to all So Goodbye Kevin Goodbye This sums up the Blaisdon Brotherhood. C.W.S.

Message: Dear John, It is great to discover this web page and to possibly contacy some of my old school friends from Farnborough Salesian College. I was a pupil there between 1942 to 1946. I moved to Canada in 1947. I was a boarder in the school during those years, I lived in Portsmouth at that time. I see that there are no boarders now. Is Angley Wood still in existence at Farnborough? Also I note that there is a mixed teaching staff now with lay teachers, including ladies. In my time there there were only two lay teachers and they did not start until 1945-46. Sorry to see that Fr. Neil Murphy died, he was Brother Neil when I first started and Fr. Murphy the last few months of my time at the school. He was a good football player and I believe played one game for Aldershot during the war,I believe it was the first time a Brother had played for a pro. team!! I will now be able to check this web page for future news. Good Luck. Frank Grealy

Having spent of my life abroad, including 21 years in Japan, I returned to England in 1996 and couldn't be closer to Battersea than I now am. I am still working and looking forward to retirement in 2004. I keep meaning to come back and visit the college and and delighted that I have found the website, via Friends Reunited. I certainly plan to be at the AGM on 27 October. Regards to anyone who can remember me. Ivan

Message: You will have seen the information from John Ward regarding Edna Calder. Having now spoken to Charlie Calder I would like to say that althrough Edna had been in pain and ill for a number of years , she always put on a brave face and they would make you so welcome if you visited them. Edna confined to her wheelchir, would call Charlie her Saint the way he cared for and looked after herthroughout her ilness. She loved to visit Lourds and Charlie had booked and arranged to take her there next week, but had to cancel the trip when she became too ill to travel. Charlie would arrange and bring Edna to the Blaisdon reunions which she enjoyed so much, we will all miss Her company. Edna would be pleased to know that many of the Blaisdon Old Boys and friends will be arranging for a Mass and Prayers to be said in their local Parishes for Her. Thank you all. May Edna Rest in Peace. Charles W Springett. Blaisdon Old Boy. Blaisdon Past Pupils Assn President.

Message: Hi Folks I left the Hall in 1948 if you are interested you may contact me at the above. I plan to be at the Blaisdon reuinion this year. However, I am building a house and trying to sell my old one. I feel the old one is sold but if it falls through I will not be going to England this year. I really don,t want to miss the reuinion so lets hope the contract on my old home become unconditional in the near future.I was in England twice in the last three years and staying with a pal in Wichcoombe not far from the Hall, what a shame I was unaware in both visits that whilst there a reunion took place. Best wishes to all Regards Alastair

Message: Hi again you Blaisdon Old Boys. I received a prose from Tony Brady {from Ireland} and thought you old un's would like, and understand it will bring back memories for many of you Now Autumn's kiss is Winter's bite, my lips crack as I breathe the chill morning air; on the orchard gate a silken sieve sways; a spider tugs it's lair on rusted bars, silvered overnight. Pigstyes sleep; windows double glazed with frost glint back the sun's bright gleam, over a tractor's bonnet a sack has frozen stiff as oaken beam from its pen the bull roars, morning dazed. Up the farm drive on urgent call -diesel fumes hang in the air- Tractor tyre prints in the snow lead ti the village church and from there the road is cleared by Brother Joe 'neath gated Lodge to Blaisdon Hall. Silence; I mix the pigs herd's morning meal, from a wall warm looking cats stare hungry at the steaming swill; the fattest of them gnaws a hare snared that night. When air was still and freezing I woke and heard its dying squeal. Stud Farm Blaisdon 1957 By Tony Brady.

Message: Greetings to all Blaisdon Past Pupils. After our get together after Easter Mike O'Brien has wriitten a poem which I attach and am sure many of you will appreciate. The Severn Vale lays open to the sky The church sits patiently on the hill Its bells are calling but from some there'll be no reply We talk together under an April sky The church waits patiently upon the hill Behind us the orchard is in bloom Our thoughts for friends and live's gone by Befriended by this hamlet long ago From a common Dickensian horror We thought it paradise when we came And have never ceased to think it so A sadness lightly lays itself arround The group of elderly men that stand To pay respects for friends long gone In a silence that is rich with sound We gather around the communal stone And cast a prayer upon the breeze And for a moment the group unites With thoughts of friends no longer alone The Severn Vale is not aware The church has seen it all before But under the trees lays the stone A reminder old friends will always care We shuffle and pause reluctant to return To cars that will bear us on our way From this poignant and bucolic charm From Blaisdon for which which we'll always yearn. Copyright Mike O'Brien April 2002 I believe this sums it all up for what we all feel about Blaisdon. Best wishes to you all. Charles W Springett

The owners have had to request people walking their grounds to leave and in some cases have received some abuse in doing so. I do not believe this to have been Salesian Past Pupils but others used to walking the grounds in the past.Thank for understanding.

Message: To 1980/82 Farnborough Old Boys "What were you doing on 6th July 1982? It's 20 years since we were all sat in the school hall, under Don Bosco's gaze, pondering the works of Milton, Plank and Keynes and spewing out 3 hours worth of condensed intellect: and where did it get us? Well, time has come to find out. Twenty years seems an appropriate period to have elapsed, before holding the first 'Boys of '82' reunion. It's a test the water kick off, very low key, planned for 7pm on Saturday 6th July 2002 at non other than The Squirrel (public house opposite the end of Reading Road). There's no commitment, no money involved (although the beer is not free), no wives or partners (unless you married Pamela Anderson) and no excuse. If it goes well, turnout is good then who knows, next time we'll be more adventurous, I think Lugui's still does rolls. So let either myself or Pete Spelman know, if you can make it and PLEASE pass this on to anyone you are still in contact with. Mike Redgewell has recently been in contact and whatever happened to Giorgio Santoro?" Pete Spelman, 58 Fairfield Road, Winchester, Hants SO22 6SG. Message: I have bookmarked the FMA link, and look forward to the site being fleshed out with more details about individual houses and schools and their respective histories. As the site points out, 2002 marks the centenary of the Salesian Sisters' arrival at Battersea - as well as, I think, the 10th anniversary of Sacred Heart's removal from Trott Street to Este Road. 2002 also marks the centenary of the foundation of the English Province of the Salesian Congregation, with Battersea becoming the Mother House - ie, no longer a mere outstation of Turin.

Message: It was a great shock to hear of Bro Joe's death. I like so many Blaisdon Old Boys expected him to go on forever. He was an inspiration to all at Blaisdon and will everyone miss him so much.Terry O'Neill and I managed to see him at Farnborough a number of times and even with his poor eyesight he was always knew who it was as soon as we spoke. He was a true Salesian and follower of Don Bosco, and will find his reward in heaven with so many who have gone before him. May he Rest In Peace. C.W.S.

Message: Dear Readers, especially Blaisdon Past Pupils, It is with much sadness that I have learned that Brother Joe Carter SDB died today a Frimley Park Hospital. Many of you will no doubt remember Brother Joe chasing around Blaisdon in his tractor as though it was a F1 racing car. Please remember him in your prayers. A very wonderful tribute was received from our Provincial who is in Rome for the General Chapter, which I repat below. John Ward, Vice President, Salesian Past Pupils Federation (GB) It was with real sadness that I learned of the death of Bro Joe Carter. I spoke with him on Saturday evening- a few hours before I left for Rome. He had not been well for several days but he appeared to be recovering so the news of his death came as a complete surprise to me.Fr John Dicskon sends his sympathy as do Fr Luc van Looy and the other members of the General Council and the General Chapter. We thank Lord for Bro Joe's life. May he rest in peace. Fr Francis Preston SDB

Message: Fond memories of Chertsey from 1959-1963. Worst moment: Waiting outside Fr (Snudge) Curran's office on a Monday for 6 of the best. Best Moment: Just missing Fr (Jakes) Lavery with an arrow during archery practice. Funniest Moment: Fr Perla blowing up the Chemistry lab. Sadest Moment: When the tuck shop ran out of "frozen jubly". Most Memorable Moment: Fr Bamber hiding the Fete Day takings in the toilet, he felt it was the safest place as no one believed that a priest used such a place. All the best to all Salesian students both past and present. Regards, Chris Rose (Formally known as Rose C)

Message: I am currently in the process of contacting all Chertsey Old Salesians that have registered on friends reunited and the school web site (www.salesian.surrey.sch.uk), in an attempt to re-establish the Past Pupils Association for Chertsey. The plan is to hold an inaugural meeting sometime in January / February 2002, and by inviting replies to my initial e-mail I will build a database of past pupils who show an interest. So far I am up to 1988 on the friends reunited site, and have had a good response. If you are a Chertsey past pupil, and would be interested in a PPA, please reply and I will keep you informed of developments. Kind regards Mike Quinlan

Message: I found this site through Friends Reunited and am amazed at the info.that is availiable. I was at the Cowley school from 1951 to 1956 and they were very happy days. Does anyone remember Father Harries, Headmaster. Father Carrol, Father Gaffney, Father Pilbeam. My spellings are possible wrong but it was a long time ago.The old school fell into a sorry state a few years ago but has now been re-generated and looks fine. The old playing field is residence for students of Brooks Uni.It does not seem possible that so much change has taken place. Best regards to all past pupils and Priests, brothers and some fine lay teachers. Pete Devonport

Message: Hello to all of you. I am a product of Don Bosco School-Philippines. I spent 10 years in a system of Salesian education. I came to work as a nurse in NHS hospital here in Stoke on Trent. Since the time i got here i really wanted to visit at least one Don Bosco School here in England. Will somebody tell me where to go or even give me an address so i can pay them a visit. My classmate back home who is already an SDB wants some pictures of Don Bosco School here. Thank you very much. N.B. I am a devout Catholic. "Once a Bosconian will always be a Bosconian".

Message: Some news on a Battersea Past Pupil:- The Daily Telegraph reports today that Gordon Brown has ordered the Treasury to begin assessing the 5 economic tests for UK joining the Euro. "The assessment is being coordinated by Gus O'Donnell, the second permanent secretary at the Treasury. He is one of the most senior Whitehall mandarins, who served as John Major's press secretary, and is the director in charge of the Treasury's Macro-Economic and International Policy Making Department. About 150 staff report to him and most of those are understood to have some input on the work on monetary union. Mr O'Donnell is said to have begun the work about a month ago." [Gus O'Donnell plays regularly for the Old Salesian Football Club Veterans XI.] At least we know who to blame if it goes wrong!

Message: Just under six weeks ago, I recommended the 'alumnus' site:- http://www.friendsreunited.co.uk - particularly the Battersea section, which had 63 names. Well, it has now just over treble that number - 190. As the sections for the other Salesian schools show similar popularity, I think it might be a good idea if this link were substituted for the one you have on your links page. Last time I looked, Battersea had only three names! By the way, friendsreunited also has a thriving section for Sacred Heart, Trott Street. Go to it! Robert Hogan (Battersea, 1957-64)

Message: Dear Readers, I attended the Farnborough School Centenary Fete and Final closing Mass last weekend. What a wonderful event this celebration turned out to be. A truly fitting tribute to the first 100 years as a Salesian School. Everyone involved with the planning and execution of this marvellous event are to be heartily congratulated and should feel very satisfied with all their hard work. It is to be hoped that the Centenary Project proposed by Head, Patrick Wilson, is well on the way to the target required to provide the School with a Sports Pavilion that such a great School deserves. Best wishes, John Ward, Vice President, Salesian Past Pupils' Federation (GB)

Message: Hi, just flushed with enthusiasm after attending the Old Salesians Assoc. Re-union at Farnborough. Nice to see the same old faces, but it would be great to meet up with other contemporaries; my stay at the college encompassed quite a few years 1941-54, so there must be quite a few of you out there. We still have our 49rs dinner around October, held at the old Queens Hotel. Names some will no doubt remember come each year; Bill French, Peter Hicks, Roy Walker, Pat Cummuskey, Dave Taylor, the two McDonnells, Terry & Mike, Brian Mason etc. As my period at the college stretched into the 50's, I'd love to hear from Leo Tobin, Paul Bagnall, Jaskolski & others. Regards to all. Chas McDevitt.

Our year has had several re unions thanks to the efforts of Alan Ebbage and Patrick Wills. I am still living in Farnborough and hope to attend the centenary celebrations this June. I recently met Father McGuinness and Father Thompson in the local shopping centre and it was a treat to reminisce with them. Excellent site which I am sure will grow even better. Imagine my surprise when, browsing through the Centenary supplement that accompanied the Newsletter, I saw the photograph of Form 2 - 1969-70, with yours truly standing in the front row. What an honour! Congratulations to the person responsible for choosing what can only be described as a vintage year! If the rest of Fr. Sutherland's illustrated history "Many Lives Through Many Eyes" is of a similar quality, then I have no choice but to order a copy!

Message: John, Thankyou for forwarding my previous message on. I also just accessed a list of Catholic schools in the UK and I saw that Michael Delmer, and Peter Boyle were listed as being at Farnborough. "Brother" Michael Delmer and Father Boyle were there the whole time I was there, although they may not remember. Please give them my best regards. I do not remember much about Fr.O'Byrne and I do not recall him teaching. Of course I was only 10 at the time I joined the school but I think I recall him being a rather tall man! Anyway best regards from rainy humid Florida. Chris Ludeman

Message: Hi, I was a "boarder" at Farnborough from Sept 1963 for about 5 years (it's so long ago now!!) At that time the prep school was still in existence where a housing estate now stands, and I was in Upper Prep when I started. I have many memories of the times I spent there (some of them fuzzy by now) and would like to get in contact with some of my classmates of the time. I left the Upper Sixth form in 1972 to go to UWIST in Cardiff. I don't see any of the priests that I grew with in the current list for the school. I assume they have either passed away or moved on to other schools. If anyone reads this and remembers me at all please contact we at the email above. Thanks Chris

You will be pleased to know that the duplicate entry for the Cowley website has now been erased by alumni net.Yes, I have looked at the Shrigley site and I'm very impressed to say the least. Perhaps we can get together with Richard as you suggest, and also with the Shrigley whizz-kid? Incidentally have you heard from Richard recently? I tried contacting him about whether he had sent out last year's reunion newsletter because I wanted him to put in a mention about the Cowley website. Alas no word and no newsletter - I do hope he is in good health. Anyway John, let me know your views and we'll speak again soon. Best wishes, Nick

Message: Dear John Ward, It would appear that the alumni net have now set up a second site for Salesian College, Oxford. The one I originally set up is 'Salesian College, Oxford' but there is now a second one called 'Salesian College, Cowley, Oxford'. The sites sit side by side on the page but I am in the process of getting this new one removed - luckily no-one has joined it. Incidentally, there is now a second member on my original site, a Brian Mallon from California. If anyone knows of him (he was a boarder at Cowley from 1960 -66) his e-mail address is on the site. I have put him in touch with this site so watch this space for contact.... Regards, Nick Holligan

Message: Dear all, I have been looking for ages to try and find a website where it could be possible to meet and get in contact with old pupils. I was a pupil at Battersea from 1985 - 1990 I was in the Beta classes and was in Fisher House, I would really like to get in touch with any of my old school friends and teachers and perhaps arrange a get together. Is it possible to perhaps attend a re-union one year or am I too young??? Kind regards, and keep up the good work, Richard Doyle

Message: Name: John Ward Hometown: Uxbridge, Middx Sent: 8:24 PM - 10/2 Dear Tim WinstanleyHere is more info provded by Loe Lomax, President, Shriglr Past Pupils AssociationBest wishes,John WardJoe Lomax <joe@lomax.cc>Date: 02 October, 2000 08:42Subject: Bishop Luigi Versiglia and Father Callisto Caravario, the new Saints.Dear Shriglesians, I am so glad that others have better memories than I have. Fr Bob Coupe emailed to remind me that the wing in which we had the "Boys Ref." was called the MARTYRS WING. I had thought that the name Versiglia was familiar and at this my brain began to stir. Things became clearer when Fr George Robson, at Thornleigh on Sunday for the 75th celebrations, recalled the concrete block set in the outside of the wall of the Boys Ref. and on which were inscribed the names of the two martyrs, now Saints. The celebrations at Thornleigh were really something to be remembered. On the Saturday evening we had a nostalgic "Old Boys Band" concert in the presence of Fr Michael McGovern who was in charge of music for 34 years. His band were truly famous and my eldest son, Peter used to look forward to Saturday nights with the Band Concerts. My daughter, Anne was the first girl ever in "Jock's Band" and was pictured in the Universe and mentioned on Radio Manchester. On the Sunday we had a Mass in the beautiful Chapel at Thornleigh. Fr John Corcoran was there and He was in the very first class when it opened in 1925.He has moved from his Parish work into Farnborough. Fr Michael McGovern is doing Parish work at St Joseph's in Durham and it may be that ALAN BURNS would like to base his North East meeting there. Is it not central enough, Alan? Will you please let me know. Finally, once again I invite anyone who is anywhere remotely near Glasgow and would like to join us,there is a gathering of the clans at St Benedicts, Easterhouse, Glasgow on this coming Saturday, October 7th. It commences with Mass for those who would like to attend, at 2.00 and the Meeting at 3.00p.m.John Burke and I are going up with Brother Donald MacDonald. Please let me have your news and try to find other ex-students. Regards Joe Lomax P.S. Salesian College and Battersea Grammar turn up. As of 21st September there are only two entries so far - plenty of room for more!It is also interesting to go to the Home page of Alumni Net and enter 'Salesian' in the Search box!

Unfortunately I have received no response from Mr. Potter nor to my letter dated 28th May to Mr Stephen McCann. Please is there somebody who can at least advise me if this is an impossible or difficult task. I really do feel that any file that may still exist on Albert Hugh Cook could be the key to finding out some information to assist him in discovering something about his family before it is too late. I would be more than happy to come to London to meet with somebody if this would help.Thank you so muchRegards,Chris Paton
