COMMENTS<GB:>The current troubles in Burma remind me of the ex Blaisdon boys who served their country in the armed forces during the 1950s. Lionel Essex, of course comes to mind. He distinguished himself in Korea at the Battle of The Imjim River with The Gloucester Regiment. I did not know Lionel personally but did see him once when he gave a talk to the Blaisdon Hall Boys in 1954. He was missing one eye as I remember.
One boy I am thinking of these past few days is Paul Studd. I succeeded him as pigman at Stud Farm in 1955. as he was "joining up". Within a year he was dead having perished in a flight over the jungles of Burma.
At Stud Farm we learned of Paul's death from the community's edition of The Daily Telegraph.Paul hated the pigs and vented his unfriendly feelings on them. Consequently, when I took over the sows of the Large White breed they were particularly vicious and ganged up on me. One particular sow was called "Belle" had tusks and she used to run at me and would have mauled me severely times had I not the ability to leap over the stye wall as she came at me. Belle, I was to learn later means lovely/beautiful in french. She was no beauty but most fecund and was tolerated for this ability: she invariably produced 20 piglets at each farrow.Father Dan decided after yet another fearful go at me by "Belle" that the market for "Fat Sows" as mentioned on the BBC wireless Farming News every morning was the best place for this nasty porcine specimen.
Paul bullied me at Enfield and teased me at Blaisdon as "Father Daniel Lucy's little mole!" Yet when I learned of his death I cried over him quite a lot as I mixed the swill and doled it out to the screaming hordes whose hungry cries could be heard up at Blaisdon Hall. I forgave him all for his bravery - he did not have to join up as he was exempted - but I guess he felt that he had to do his duty as a soldier. Not long after my taking over the fearsome sows of Stud farm Fr. Dan introduced the Landrace breed from Scandinavia. A docile form whose floppy ears made them much easilly managed. The Large White had prick up ears so that had a good view of all about them. I loved the piglets though and gave them extra TLC to compensate for the rages of their former manager.Paul preferred to be a tractor man and was very kind to them though. Rest in Peace Paul - No Hard feelings.<GB_FIELD_END>

COMMENTS<GB:>Friends,ex-schoolfellows & chums I have received some very useful feed-back on the final Part of my draft book: Scenes from an Examined Life. There are Masters of English out there whose English teachers at Enfield and Blaisdon would be proud of them. I count myself lucky that they have taken the time to check my grammar, syntax and English usage and send me their findings. No names at the moment but I am honoured because I know that what I have written has been carefully read which is the greatest compliment to the putative author. Many Thanks to all. COMMENTS<GB:>Thank you John for your reply. I made a major omission in my message and it was the name of Terry O'Neill. Mea culpa Terry. Also the e-mail tag was incorrect. Today, I have been scanning letters from many of the names mentioned and on just logging off noticed that there are over two thousand words that I have transmitted to form the main the text of the Epilogue. A good couple of hours work. Benedicamus Domine. Deo Gratias and Goodnight to all. Tony Brady.<GB_FIELD_END>

COMMENTS<GB:>Coming Soon.. Part 3 "Nothing Matches - but it's Home!" To Father Sean, John Ward, Norman Taylor, Eric Nutcher, Peter Landsborough, Michael O'Brien, Michael McKenna, Charles Springett, Tony Wadsworth, Sammy Hayes, Roger Allen and Laurence "Curly" Stanton. All of whom have read and written to me with their impressions of Parts 1 & 2 of my autobiography Scenes from an Examined Life. Listen out for a heavy thud on the hallway, lino, carpet or boards. Quarantine the cat and the dog: though you should not have to widen the letter box for this tome of almost a hundred pages with lots of pictures to boot. All that remains is for me to complete the Epilogue which is a digest of your letters which I am busy working on daily. The bidding war has begun among the publishers already. But first sight is for your eyes only chums because you're worth it! Kindest Regards. Tony Brady.<GB_FIELD_END>

COMMENTS<GB:>Good to read of a Brother Edward Barron connection making contact. Welcome Paddy M. and the appreciation of him. Maybe lots of people don't know or, maybe they do, that before his apostolate in Blaisdon Br.E. was for many years a guide in the catacombes of Rome. At one time the Salesian Fathers had a concession in that area. He was always extremely pale as I remember. The photo mentioned is indeed one of Brother Edward Barron.<GB_FIELD_END>

COMMENTS<GB:>I like your website because ...
Bro.Edward Barron was a great friend of my late mother and father. He was an altar server at Sacred Heart Parish in Strabane, where my late aunt was the priest's housekeeper for a short while. She later became a Carmelite nun. Like my parents, she had good things to say about the late Bro.Barron. I remember him as a kind and happy person. Photo 13 in the gallery looks like him, but it is a very old one.<GB_FIELD_END>

COMMENTS<GB:>Dear Michael,
It is great to have your message in our Guestbook all the way from Australia. I do hope that some from your years will make contact with you.
We held our Annual Reunion in Blaisdon Village last weekend. We use the Village Hall as the Blaisdon Hall is now private house. We had our Mass in St. Michael's Church on the Hill, you may remember it.
Bro. Alan Garman, who is usually always at our Reunions is now 91 years, and due to failing health was unbale to be with us. He is now at the Salesian House in Farnborough, where he gets the excellent care he deserves after all the care he lavished, with love, on all the Blaisdon Boys whom he met.
If you want to send him an Email, which I am sure would perk him up quite a bit, you could use bmbriansdb@aol.com, which is the Rector's Email address.
Best wishes,
John<GB_FIELD_END>

COMMENTS<GB:>John - Hello!
Thank you for the sad news about Gordon Robertson RIP. I have sent a letter to Betty as follows:
Dear Betty,
I write to express my profound sorrow on learning of Gordon‘s death and express my deepest sympathy to you in your sudden and unexpected loss.
I had already left Blaisdon Hall when Gordon arrived there circa 1956 but was a worker on Stud Farm so I would have seen him often during his working time in the kitchen as I delivered the milk, potatoes and eggs. He was a friendly and very approachable person and really enjoyed the demanding work preparing the meals which daily served over a hundred people in those days: Priests, Lay-Brothers, boys, visitors and the farm and garden workers.
As you know, he wrote a most vivid and memorable account of his time in Blaisdon and I was particularly touched that he remembered and referred to me in his brilliant contribution to the book entitled The Re-Collections of Past Pupils Blaisdon Hall.
It is very difficult for me to find the words that could adequately attempt to offer comfort to you and your family at this tragic time but I found personal inspiration in Gordon’s own words: “So I now thank God for my life.. I have a great wife and family…”
In Gordon you had a fine husband and dedicated carer who is absolutely irreplaceable and all who knew him will remember his life in their own special way. At this time I am thinking specially of you and just want to thank you for all the love and happiness you gave to Gordon. I know that many people will be praying for you and from this distance I will share their prayers in spirit and will feel close to you and Gordon. I will never forget him and I will always include you in my own remembrances.
With every kind regard.<GB_FIELD_END>

Great to hear a comment in the guest book, it's been very quite of late, and as I mentioned at the reunion meeting, not many seem to take advantage of what we've got.

COMMENTS<GB:>Tony. Your profile of St. John Bosco, brought back one of memories of when I was in an orphanage in Birmingham in 1949. I was in the city centre one Saturday mornig. and there was an exibition in a plac called Bingley Hall. In one of the booths a film was being shown by the Salesians. I decided to spend awhile in there. It was a film about the life od Don Bosco. I was so taken by it, I stayed in there for the whole day. It was at the time when my stay at the home was coming to an end. Imagine my surprise that in about a month later, my next destination was to be The Salesian School Blaisdon Hall Gloucester. What a wonderful start in life that was for me.<GB_FIELD_END>

COMMENTS<GB:>I thought a Profile of St. John Bosco would be appreciated by visitors to the Guestbook. An annual highlight in my days at Blaisdon was the feature film of Don Bosco played by italian actors. The scene in which Don Cafasso insists that the young novice Bosco get the latin right by tapping on the floor with his walking stick Dominum! Dominum!and the scene where Don Bosco comforts a prisoner - who learning the priest is in the prison implores Don Bosco! Don Bosco! Don Bosco hears his cries and stays with him as he is executed, are particulary memorable memorable. I wonder if the film is still available? There was another film made of St. Dominic Savio.<GB_FIELD_END>
